The fastest and easiest way by far to build a huge e-mail list: ‘High Leverage’ - Episode 70

This year my ferocious FOCUS is on using simple, ‘high leverage’ tactics to grow
my LIST far faster than using ‘traditional’ means. And it gives a ton of extra value
to my SUBSCRIBERS.

Now pay attention here, because this is very instructive:

Instead of hammering away with keywords, SEO and optimisation for my IM sites to get traffic to my opt in page, I’m investing time in closing simple co-operative deals with other marketers and media contacts, many of them really nice people I have never met before.

I recommend you immediately start this simple but powerful strategy for growing your list
in 2010.

Here’s a real life ‘high leverage’ example:

I have just talked for 40 very rewarding minutes with genius membership site marketer – Kim Roach.

As a result, we’ll be doing an ‘Ad swap’ where she will invite her list of subscribers to sign up for my 22 Traffic Secrets, and I will offer something equally fabulous of hers to my list.

Both Kim and will I grow our lists a little and our subscribers get excellent high value content, an all round win, win for everyone, particularly the subscribers, who MUST come first every time.

How did this high leverage deal happen?

I simply left a genuinely interested comment on Kim’s ‘Buzz Blogger’ blog, and she sent me an
e-mail of appreciation. We hooked up and it went on from there …

Bottom line is, see Kim’s post – The Top 5 Ways to Drive Traffic in 2010 - they’re not only ‘high Leverage’, but they just plain work.

Here’s the deal:  You can easily do this leverage tactic too, repeatedly.  Just start looking at who you might contact right way, it’s a no brainer.

    Hi Jonathan

Thank you, and to Kim too! I feel sooooooooo much better about 2010. Like a millstone’s been lifted off my neck. Leverage seems ridiculously obvious now. My mind is swirling with ideas.

I haven’t seen Kim before. What is her ‘membership’ site? Where is it? How do I sign up? (+ See my e-mail)

Julie. All the best for 2010.

And please, please put at least ONE all those ’swirling ideas’ into action right away!

Kims’ membership site is currently closed for new members. But I’ll notify you when it’s open again. (I hope she will – because it’s the BOMB – a seriously valuable IM community.)

Jonathan, I like your ‘Ferocious Focus’ idea. It’s even better than Gary Vaynerchuk’s ‘Crush It’ war cry. (Sorry Gary but …)

Will there be any TV in 2010?

BUT, what about those of us who have very little to offer, say, to “Kim”?

    Hi Jonathan

Just received an email from you sending me to this post and glad I clicked through…! Focus is definitely the name of the game so thanks for the nudge! Much appreciated, thank you.

Johnathan, I 100 % agree. I went to a Matt Bacak’s Survival Tacticsfor Toug Times huge event in Atalanta, GA, in December of 2009. There were some really ” Big Dog Marketers” there. They wanted us to meet and form JV partners during the event. This way we all help each other and win the online Marketing Game.

    Thanks for this article.

Kim’s techniques require work – but they all work and work well.
She throughly explains everything, sends tons of free content,
    she is among one of the most respected posters on The Warrior Forums;

I say this because its true; I do not know her personally but if
you have ounce one in your head you will listen to her and join her
mailing list – it is 99% content – and I have paid for less content
    than what Kim delivers.

John you do a fine job too – I am sorry if I seem a bit jaded
towards Kim, just I have seen over a year of commentary from her
and she delivers. I love the case studies of how she takes
an article or site and explodes traffic on these sites :)

I think I will join her traffic club today :)
If you think I am kidding call me -
    as in internet marketer for
over 12 years it looks like these two are the real deal

    Hi Jonathan,

Man! Success really does boil down to the old adage of “it’s not what you know, but, who you know.”Then we take what we’ve learned from who we know and just blow it out of the water!

Case in point of how good things come to be and transcend (actually spider). I received an e-mail from Stephanie Mulac, a successful marketer, who’s list I’ve been on since December of 09, she then lead me to Paul Walker’s new course, then in doing my du-diligence on Paul, I was lead to the “diamond in the rough”Kim Roach!

I firmly believe, as you probably do Jonathan, that everything happens for a reason. The universal laws have guided me to Kim, and now I know with absolute certainty, that my struggling in this awesome industry of ours, is over! But, I know from falling flat a million times, that we must once and for all apply daily what we learn daily, or it all is meaningless and effortless activity.

Oh! I almost forgot that Kim lead me to you, Jonathan……a good encounter indeed!

In closing, it all boils down to building “strategic alliances”with the right people, which came straight from Kim and I’ll never forget it; Kim’s doing it so why can’t we? By the way, Kim’s “Super Affiliate Club”Membership Site is re-launching very soon, and I believe for those of us who’ve never experienced her training yet, it’ll be w/o question and w/o doubt, the turning point in our lives; can’t wait!

The best to all in 2010!

Hi John lots of good points there and agree entirely that everything happens for a reason. Also sounds like you are well on the path to success buddy. I’m particularly glad that you’ve joined my ‘tribe’ – as Seth Godin would say.

Hey … that is a long time in internet Marketing – 12 years!

You must have just about seen it all. I guess you”ll have concluded the same as me that it’s all about getting people who trust you to an offer that is genuinely valuable.

Good point re ‘Matt Bacak’s Survival Tactics for Tough Times’ – that sounded like a fabulous conference – glad to see a major point they taught was doing JVs.
Sure does accelerate the process of list building – or any business for that matter.

Yes, yes true. It IS tricky at the start.

What I did originally was build a seed list of about 500 people by leaving blog comments everywhere with a link back to my site. Only then did I offer to do my first JV.

I’m sure you have at least a litte knowledge of Internet marketing Nixar – I would make a 5 page report, then put that up as your free offer to build the initial list of 500 people, then away you go – JV away.

If you are right at the start point (like most people) here is the first thing to decide. Do you want to be a public marketer with a list, or private with sites that earn behind the scenes?

Lots of people would prefer to be quietly making a fortune instead of being seen. Let me know which way you want to start Raul.

    Hi Jonathan

My two cents worth. This ‘leverage’ you have written about is actually ‘Integartion Marketing’ at its best. I’m always figuring out ways to integrate to get my list bigger.

It’s so valuable to have this different angle. Ad swaps.

I had never thought of it. Thanks

G’day again Johnaton, happy new decade, the post by Kim Roach is a Cracker, thanks for sharing that. I love the way you write, you paint a big picture but really cut to the meat of a topic (ferocious FOCUS).

I think focus is the word for 2010, for 3 key reasons.

1)I noticed towards the end of 2009 that just having a Social Media Presence was not longer enough for many brands. Early 2009 is a business had a Facebook page that was something of a novelty and would convert visitors to fans by the end of 2009 the page needed to be branded, have a custom landing tab and a “focussed” value proposition to achieve the same kinds of conversion rates.

    2) Not only is the subtly of distraction, more prevasive it’s coming from more angles in 2010. Those who are spend more time focused on key tasks and rise above the noise, are the ones who will move ahead this year. It not so much a new skillset but requires greater mastery.

    3) A kind of combo of the first two. As the people formerly know as the audience become fatigued by ubiquitous and increasingly more sophisticated calls for their attention, and as the understanding of Social Media becomes more commonplace. What we offer as marketers needs to provide a laser focussed benefit to our prospects to break through and get real attention.

That’s the way I see the landscape and I think Kim Roach’s strategies reflect these trends. Right I got some work to do ;-)

All the very best to you and your readers for the future. Deano

Hi bud. Wow! That’s almost a blog post in its own right. We could get VERY confused by all the specialists telling us that their way is essential for success in 2010.

Quoting you: “…. Those who are spend more time focused on key tasks and rise above the noise, are the ones who will move ahead this year….”

    Excellent. You nailed it.

    Hi Jonathan,

    Thank you for your ideas.

Great technique to use to grow your list and provide value to
the JV partner and their list at the same time.

I know marketers have segmented lists, so do you make sure
that the JV uses their entire list to offer your gifts or products?

As opposed to just a segment [or non buyers list] of an entire list.
Heard about that sort of thing on a webinar.

It’s a good idea to have your offer on the JV’s download page
because the buyer is in a buying mode at that point and will be
more receptive to your offer. And they are proven buyers.

Unless you are offering something for free to get opt-ins.

Bye the way how did you get to be able to interview those
22 great marketers? Do you have a seperate squeeze page with
this on it i think conversions would be giant on that as well?

    Take care.

    Tony

Hi Tony. There’s a lot of trust involved in Ad swaps, and one can’t really expect to demand of a partner that a segment be ‘buyers only’. Why would they comply?

Instead, the best way is to gain their trust, and work on that basis. This usually pays off if you are honest, genuine and clearly mean to hold up your side of the bargain.

Re. Putting one’s offer on the partner’s page: This is also difficult simply because you are intruding right into their territory and brand! However you can ASK them to do this – and if it is a blog and your offer is only put into a single blog post, then they may feel happy to do this as it will not dominate their site .

Re Conversion rate: The ‘22 secrets’ opt-in page converts between 50% and 70%. I’ll be e-mailing you (and everyone) about how this was achieved.

But an even more interesting number is about an e-mail I sent last week: The opening rate was over 50%. This is unheard of – mostly the average is around 15%. I’m hoping this is the result of caring about the people on my list and answering their questions. Most of them are genuinely nice people looking for answers, and so I attempt to reply to their questions straight up.

People appreciate this, and I have discovered over a long period that this is how a business is built. So I plan to continue helping folks as much as possible.

Keep watching this space Tony. It’s going to get interesting

    Jonathan

PS. By the way Tony … You won the 30 minute consulting session with me – for asking the trickiest questions :) I’ll be in touch.
